Valve and Collabora build Holo Core Arm64 Arch for Steam Frame VR
An Arm64 upstream push could reshape SteamOS 3, Steam Linux share, and how quickly gaming moves to new silicon.

That sounds like an internal engineering project until you connect it to what Arch already represents on Steam. In the June 2026 Steam Survey, “Steam OS Holo 64-bit” sits at 22.83 percent, behind only CachyOS at 14.03 percent among double-digit distros. Combine that with other Arch variants and you get 47.49 percent of Steam Linux usage. So when SteamOS Holo keeps moving toward Arm64, it is not just a niche hobbyist port. It is a mainstream platform decision, and it is happening right when Valve is taking orders for the Steam Frame.
Why does this matter for decision-makers? Because the friction is usually not the kernel, it is the packaging, build scripts, and CI pipeline that make a distribution “feel native” on new hardware. The source is explicit: building the Arm64 port requires “substantial work on the build system and CI pipeline,” plus “rebuilding thousands of packages and dependencies.” That is the unglamorous, expensive middle layer where timelines slip and costs multiply. If Valve and Collabora can crack it for Holo Core, the payoff is leverage. The port becomes a reusable pathway for future devices.
Arch’s structure is the other half of the story. Arch targets 64-bit x86 in its official upstream distro, and its homepage says: “Currently we have official packages optimized for the x86-64 architecture.” Arch has spawned many derivatives and flavors, including ArchLinux32 for x86-32 and Artix Linux, which is systemd-free. There is also “an Arm flavor called Arch Linux ARM,” sometimes shortened to ALARM, which the source says supports 61 different Arm devices, including the Raspberry Pi 2, 3, 4, and Zero 2. But ALARM is described as an independent downstream port, not the official upstream path. Its main GitHub repo has a PKGBUILDs repository with specially modified PKGBUILD scripts to build Arm versions of upstream Arch packages.
The ambition with Holo Core is to close that gap. The work was rumored in May, and the longer-term plan is to build Arm64 support directly into the original PKGBUILD scripts so they can build for both x86-64 and Arm64. That is a meaningful architectural shift, because PKGBUILD scripts are central to how Arch packages are built. If Arch’s core build recipes become multi-architecture, then downstream maintainers lose some reasons to fork and duplicate effort.
Now add the hardware catalyst. The reason for the port is the forthcoming Steam Frame VR headset. SteamOS 3, Valve’s modern Linux OS rebuilt on Arch Linux, originally had an internal codename “Holo.” The source notes that Valve has been funding development of the FEX emulation engine to run x86 binaries on Arm, referencing prior coverage of Steam on Arm64 Ubuntu. That matters because Steam Frame is not an AMD CPU device, at least not based on what is publicly known in the source. For now, specs say it will use a “4 nm Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3.” Steam Frame is built to stream games and media from other devices, but it will also be able to play them locally. In other words, it has to work as a compute environment, not just a screen.
This is where the “build once, run anywhere” promise meets real constraints. Emulation can bridge binary compatibility, but packaging and CI determine developer velocity and user stability. The source also says there is no installable image yet, but Collabora has released preview binaries, source packages, and a development container. For an x86 host, the easiest experimentation path is using the container with QEMU emulation. That’s a clear signal of staging: developers can test without fully shipping a turnkey OS image, while the build system and dependency graph are still being hardened.
Finally, zoom out to the second-order implications for anyone operating in the Linux-on-gaming ecosystem. Arch is already topping Steam’s Linux usage charts, and the June 2026 survey data shows Steam OS Holo 64-bit at 22.83 percent. If SteamOS Holo’s Arm64 support grows, it can accelerate momentum for other Arm Linux platforms and reduce the “it only works on x86” ceiling that has historically slowed mainstream Arm adoption. Also, while the source says it is not aware of any official connection, the name “FEX” is noted as reminiscent of DEC’s FX!32 emulator for running x86-32 binaries on Alpha CPUs. Whether or not the branding traces anything lineage-like, the core reality is that Valve is investing in the compatibility layer that makes architecture transitions survivable.
